VIDEOGAMES IN EDUCATION

As we were give the question "How might you incorporate video games in general into the regular curriculum?" , this essay will handle some ideas

Videogames in teaching and education - how could it be reasonable, when kids and students play and tap they mobile phones and tablets all the time that it is irritating. parents and teachers say that they should close up all equipments. Mark Prensky started to think other way and talk about diginatives.
He meant children and young who are born to use information and communication technology. they learn new things by and have new ways to think when they use this technology. This must be seen in schools today when we start to implement curriculum.

I have used many applications on my mathematic classes to get practice and motivation to addition and division. When we have started coding we used the fine material of CODE HOUR, where students can even make their own games. Still using a real video game like Minecraft is a different thing.

Our course is about Minecraft so I started to think good ways to include it to my teaching.
As I teach mathematics,  I could use Minecraft to handle geometry and improve spatial skills.
First exercise would be to build a little house. In Minecraft it is possible to look the things you have built from different directions. Students are able to study different shapes and figure out how to make them in Minecraft world.We could build different buildings from different countries and discuss where in Minecraft world it is possible to create them.

The three points in incorporating Minecraft in my teaching would be these:


1) What is the real value of the project, that means what do children discover and learn when they build the world in view of the curriculum.

2) Is the game really motivation improving, do they engage to what they are doing.

3) Is it possible to learn teamwork skills or do they still work alone?

Now when I have seen how Minecraft EDU works, I consider it a good tool to learn both teamwork and doing tasks alone. It gives teacher unlimited possibilities to build a guided learning environment almost in any school subject and combinate these subjects as our new curriculum wants us to do.

As it was mentioned in our course material, it is important to see how Minecraft is brought to the classroom environment. Experience will show if it is better to play and build with table computers or can students work smooth and flexible with tablets or mobile phones. Using blocks and building may be easier on a bigger  display. In the other hand, students may like to join the game with their own equipment and run there all around doing tasks.

Sure there is a need of good rules to handle the bunch of eager pupils. That is one way to implement the value of respecting other people and respect everybody's work. Witch is clearly mentioned in our curriculum, both in old one and coming plan for 2016. And: at school the game is not the same as at home or in free gameplay.

Because I haven't played very much the game and have used it quite a little, it is impossible to discover all the possibilities of Minecraft or any educational game. Using a game like this must be brought to education with clear targets of learning contents and outcomes, with clear plan how it is used in the classroom and with plan of the assessments to reflect the work that is done in the project.

SERVERS AND SITUATIONS

Server setuo was not very familiar to me, but I decided to try anyway. I started with downloading MinecraftEDU, because that interested me the most. Then I bought the normal Minecraft game and started to look at the videos and instructions for different servers.

Following the instructions it became clear to me that the type and the version of the server is important. I became to conclusion to get the latest versions of Vanilla and Bukkit. I started with the Vanilla server. It was very important to remember to give the rights to use files and make the start.command file so, that it finds the minecraft_server.jar.

Now it seems that both servers are working fine and i got through to Hullcraft, which was a fine experience.

Among the interesting things I've learned is to change the game mode that is very useful. when the creatures tried to come to my place I changed the mode and took some weapons to fight with.

Nobody has visited my world yet, because it is impossible to keep it up all the time. I was able to connect with one of the students' server and go into his game.

What I learned this week is:
1) How to set up a server.
2) Differences between servers and there setup.
3) Join to a multiplayer world
4) To use console for example to change the game mode.
5) Differences between Minecraft and Minecraft EDU in server set up and use.

MINECRAFT MOOC MO 2/2/15

MINECRAFT VERSIONS


In this essay the outcome is to identify and describe the differences between the different versions of Minecraft. Versions for consideration are Minecraft, MinecraftEDU, Minecraft Pi, Minecraft PE, Minecraft Xbox 360. So there are versions for computers and console versions and for hand held equipment.

The first Minecraft version was Minecraft PC that was released 2011. This version is available for PC and Mac and can be loaded for computers using different operational system like Windows, OS X and Linux. Unlike the first versions, new releases are not free and you must buy the game. Minecraft PC is the full version, where you can use all materials and blocks and gives the full possibility to use a server in multiplaying game. You control your character with mouse or keyboard.

Minecraft is a so called sandbox game, where you can go in an open world. The player can quite freely decide what to do and create in this world.

If we think about the modes you play Minecraft, iin PC version you can play in creative mode, survival mode, adventure mode or spectator mode. Creative means you have access to build and add different things to your world. It is possible to make a multiplayer game.

Minecraft EDU is a version that is created specially for educational purposes. Teachers can make a world or use pre-created worlds and add questions and tasks for pupils.  It is possible to make limitations for users so, that it is a learning environment. As the web page info says, this version is made from teachers to teachers. The teacher can host the gameplay so that pupils are allowed to do the tasks that are linked to the curriculum.there's a whole library of lessons you can use on your classes.

Before you can use MinecraftEDU you must purchase necessary server and user licences for pupils.
You must install the server and launch it start. Installer can be found on software webpage.
You must also have MinecraftEDU Client on the local computer. That makes possible to sign in the game, set custom settings e. g. From the client the player chooses to connect to the server or play single player mode.

In MinecraftEDU serverend you can control the world and commands.and saving the games You add and delete students using the game from client end. On client end it's possible to limit user options and RAM used, for example. Teacher can limit mods and tool students use.


Minecrat PE version means it is for handheld equipments, tablets and mobile phones, where operational system is different from table computers. It may be loaded as free version or another you must purchase.

MinecraftPE differs from PC version if we compare graphics and blocks the player can use.

MinecraftPE version, for example Minecraft Lite. is much limited than the real PC game. For example there only 18 blocks of normal 36. Still, it's possible to play creation mode, survival mode and  have a multiplayer game when iPads are on the same wi-fi net. In tablet version you control your character with on-screen joystick.

Minecraft Pi is created for Raspberry Pi mini computer. It works on operation system Raspian that is especially created of small Raspberry Pi. this version is very much like Minecraft pocket edition. the only game mode available is the creative mode. Some blocks and tools are only for this pocket version, like stonecutter. The player can sneak but not sprint.

In general, the differences between all these versions come from the operation system the player has, the server system that links to the gameplay and the portability of the equipment she/he is using the game with. Educational use must let the user to control and to be controlled in an other way than in free playing. In multiuser gameplay the versions differ in mode you can use and the number of users in the same LAN.
